Iran's World Cup dreams shattered as Portugal pull through

Group B's second fixture ended in heartbreak for Iran as a missed opportunity in the closing stages of the match ultimately resulted in them missing the knock out stages as Portugal barely crossed the line.

Iran needed a win in order to qualify ahead of Portugal.

There was shock in the Portugal camp when Captain Cristiano Ronaldo failed to convert from the spot with what could've been his 5th goal of the tournament. However Besiktas winger Quaresma found his way into the net with an exceptional and remarkable goal to give Portugal the lead just before halftime.

Iran had quite a few chances to score but failed to convert any of them before before being given a penalty in what seemed a dubious decision. With the help of VAR system they were awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute of the match. which was converted easily by Karim Ansarifard, however the effort wasn't enough to take them  through to the next round. They did however, stop Portugal from coming first in their group.

Portugal is through to the Round of 16 where they will face Uruguay who finished first in their group.

Group B finished with Spain on top due to a better goal difference, Portugal second, Iran third and Morocco at fourth.
