Kumail Nanjiani all set to make Pakistan proud yet again!

Our celebrities and artists have been making Pakistan proud with their achievements across the world. From starlet Mahira Khan making it to the Cannes film festival to fashion designer Rizwan Beyg showcasing his collection at the international fashion show at Buckingham Palace, this year has been quite awarding for us.

To add another feather to the cap of Pakistan, a Pakistani-American actor Kumail Nanjiani has been invited to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In other words, a Pakistani is making it to the core team behind upcoming Oscar Awards. Wooaah! The news seems unbelievable. Isn’t it? Yes, we know you can’t contain your excitement after reading this.

Please, don’t dare think it’s a rumour because Nanjiani, who is an actor cum stand-up comedian, has confirmed the news through his official Twitter account. The actor tweeted that he has made it to the Academy.

‘Hey yo, I am in the Academy,’’ wrote The Big Sick actor.

Nanjiani’s wife Emily Gordon, an American producer, writer and podcast host,  is also among the 500 people who have been invited to be a part of the Oscar’s team from across the world.

Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Tiffany Haddish , Gina Rodriguez and Chloe Zhao are among other Hollywood professionals who have been sent an invitation to become a part of the team that makes selections for Oscar-nominations.

Last year, Nanjiani starred in an American romantic comedy film The Big Sick. The film is scripted by the standup-comedian and his wife. The couple was nominated for Best Original Screen Play at the 90th Academy awards.

Nanjiani and wife bagged an Independent Screen Award for Best First Screenplay for The Big Sick.

The Karachi-born actor is also renowned for being the cast member of HBO’s series Silicon Valley. He also made it to the list of 100 most influential people around the world this year.

According to reports, Hollywood’s biggest award ceremony Oscars will be held next year on February 24.

This year, the Academy is making efforts to lean on its promise to make its ranks more diverse. Hence, it has invited a record 928 new members from across 59 countries.

In 2016, the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had promised to bring diversity in its ranks by doubling the female and minority of its members in four years’ time.

So far only one Pakistani film maker, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, has bagged Oscar Awards home in 2012 and 2016 respectively.

In 2012, Chinoy won an Oscar for her short subject documentary called Saving Face and in 2016, she achieved an Oscar in the same category for another documentary titled A Girl in The River: The price of Forgiveness.

Chinoy is the only Pakistani to have won two Oscar Awards while Kumail Nanjiani has been an Oscar Nominee last year.

We can’t now wait to see Nanjiani as a part of the world’s largest jury for the upcoming Academy awards.

We wish him best of luck for this new venture. Certainly, Nanjiani’s presence in the Academy team will pave ways for Pakistani films to make it to the Oscars.

We are eagerly waiting for the list of Oscar nominations for this year.
