New Islamabad International Airport starts operations

Prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi inaugurated the new Islamabad International Airport on Tuesday. The prime minister was accompanied by the Mayor of Islamabad, governors of KP and Punjab, and the Adviser Civil Aviation Sardar Mehtab.

It took almost 11 years to build the new airport after the ground breaking in April 2007. The airport is a 4-level passenger terminal built on 190,000 square meters.

The airport includes two runways, each 3.5 km long; 15 passenger boarding bridges; a 28 aircraft parking and 15 remote bays.

The airport also features a four-star transit hotel, convention centre, duty-free shops, mini-cinema, children's play area and a food court. The airport will also support the Airbus A380.

The airport consists of 90 check-in counters and a 2,000-vehicle parking facility. A 1200 personnel Airport Security Force has been deployed at 85 security towers to ensure safety at the airport. The airport has been equipped with advanced security management systems and two bomb pit facilities.
