Jonathan Friedland, chief communications officer, has left Netflix after he used the N-word in front of the colleagues on more than one occasion. After stating on twitter that he is leaving the company after seven years, he apologized for using the racial slur.
“I feel awful about the distress this lapse caused to people at a company I love and where I want everyone to feel included and appreciated” stated Friedland on Twitter on Friday. Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, sent a memo to employees explaining the situation.
The memo mentions the incident that occurred several months ago. In that Mr. Friedland used the N-word during a meeting with the public relations staff after which several people reported that they were offended by his use of the full word.
This did not stop here as Mr. Friedland used the same sensitive word in front of two black employees in the human resources department of Netflix. This occurred when the staff at the Human Resource department was discussing the earlier incident:
“There is not a way to neutralize the emotion and history behind the word in any context. Many of us have worked closely with Jonathan for a long time, and have mixed emotions. Unfortunately, his lack of judgment in this area was too big for him to remain” stated Hastings in the memo.
