Trump attacks Trudeau and rejects G7 communique

After leaving the G7 summit, President Trump used twitter to launch a personal attack on the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, by calling him weak and dishonest. He further added that Trudeau makes false statements and US will not sign a G7 communique. To this the Canadian government responded that Mr. Trudeau said the same things at the G7 that he had said before in both public and private meetings. He also stated that Canada is charging hefty tariffs on the products of US dairy farmers. He then instructed the US representatives at the G7 not to sign the communique. This was done after Mr. Trudeau told that the G7 had reached a joint communique which was signed by all seven members. Mr. Trump thereafter reversed the position earlier taken by the United States. The seven countries that make up the G7 are Japan, Canada, the UK, the US, Italy, France and Germany.

The communique included various aspects related to economic growth, sustainability, trade and national security. It included the notion of free trade between the seven countries while creating reciprocal benefits. In response, Trudeau stated that Canada will move forward with retaliatory measures on trade with regard to the United States. He went on to make it clear that Canadians are polite and reasonable but they will not be pushed around. Mr. Trump wants other countries to stop taking advantage of the United States. He stated that the United States is considered as the world's piggy bank and everyone is trying to rob it. James Comey, the former FBI director, weighed in and said that US-Canada relations have been built over years and will not deteriorate because of a person or dispute. The retraction from the communique shows that Mr. Trump has blurred the lines between the US government policy and his personal feelings towards other world leaders. The contempt for G7 allies is a fresh new turn in the tumultuous presidency of Mr. Trump.
